Can be found in the tummy, fallopian tube, ovary, inside the muscle layer of the uterus (Adenomyosis), bowel ( pipeline for stools), urinary bladder and ureter ( bag and pipeline for urine), rarely lungs, diaphragm etc. It is estimated to affect 25 million women in India.
CAUSE OF ENDOMETRIOSIS
Several theories have been proposed like back flow of menstrual blood into abdomen ( retrograde menstruation), genetic causes, inflammatory causes, altered immunity, coelomic metaplasia etc. Not one theory is conclusive, hence exact cause of disease cannot be pin-pointed.
